From Goodreads.com:

Kalliope lives with one purpose.

To inspire.

As an immortal muse, she doesn’t have any other choice. It’s part of how she was made. Musicians, artists, actors—they use her to advance their art, and she uses them to survive. She moves from one artist to the next, never staying long enough to get attached. But all she wants is a different life— a normal one. She’s spent thousands of years living lie after lie, and now she’s ready for something real.

Sweet, sexy, and steady, Wilder Bell feels more real than anything else in her long existence. And most importantly… he’s not an artist. He doesn’t want her for her ability. But she can’t turn off the way she influences people, not even to save a man she might love. Because in small doses, she can help make something beautiful, but her ability has just as much capacity to destroy as it does to create. The longer she stays, the more obsessed Wilder will become. It’s happened before, and it never turns out well for the mortal.

Her presence may inspire genius.

But it breeds madness, too.

My Review:

I’ve fallen behind on my TBR list as of late--newborns and toddlers, man! LOL My children are beyond worth the sacrifices but I did finally manage to read Cora Carmack’s INSPIRE (most of which while rocking Little Man to sleep) and I’m so glad to finally have gotten to it!

I have a soft spot for all books Carmack writes, but this one really garnered my attention. It could be that it’s because I’m a supernatural girl at heart, but the concept is wickedly cool. The idea of a flesh and blood Muse with a difficult control on the inspiration she gives to her artists? Epic, and Carmack executes it so well, writing it so I can do nothing but believe these Muse’s still roam the world. And, being in the Arts myself, having an explanation for the reasons as to why certain characters pop up in my head, speak to me, and demand that I write (normally at three a.m.) is very comforting ;)

Besides concept, the main characters are well rounded and have an awesome dynamic. Kalli is sympathetic instantly, the long journey of her life and her concern for those intimately involved with her paints her in a compassionate light. She’s also strong and independent and sure of herself. That is something I find so refreshing in a female lead. She doesn’t need a man to save her, but she won’t say no to a man who makes her wake up in ways that haven’t happened in centuries of life, and that is something worth diving into.

Insert Wilder Bell. Oh, Wilder...oh my, what can I say about him? It was instant love for me, his first scene in the novel showing me everything I needed to know about him to show he was an amazing character (I won’t give specifics so not to spoil it) But I will say that his actions and responses to another character make your heart melt and he has just enough mystery to make you crave more of him. He doesn’t disappoint either, the more you get to know him, the more you realize he is the best of both worlds of fictional men--sweet, smart, kind, and sexy, edgy, and a tad intimidating. This killer combo makes him wicked desirable and it’s easy to see why he catches Kalli’s eye after so long of a life without deep interest in her conquests. Wilder has a sense of honor and loyalty that mixes with an intense passion that bursts through his defenses when he is around Kalli, making the two’s dynamic an absolute delight to read.
And the HEAT factor between the two is unreal. Carmack ups the ante with these two, creating sparks so hot they jump off the page. Get ready to fan yourself and fall in love!

If all of the above wasn’t enough to convince me how much I enjoyed this novel (not to mention the ending that FORCES you to beg for the next book) then Carmack’s ability to take risks would. I love that she listened to her gut and wrote a sub-genre for New Adult that hasn’t been fully explored yet. INSPIRE is a Supernatural New Adult that sets the bar for expansion for all the sub-genres and that is a bold movement, one I love to see because while Contemporary New Adult is amazing, I believe the genre deserves full exploration for the new generations of readers it’s birthed. Variety and diversity is something every genre needs and Carmack has fully delivered. And so I say thank you to her for taking the risk and Inspiring us all to read outside the box. ;)
